Laugh List – Never Have I Ever

While I generally post on Monday, Wednesday and Friday; I’m here with a surprise post today. I’ll be back tomorrow with my usual post, too. Bonus post. Yay!

I have spent many a summers at sleepaway camp. On more than one occasion, groups of us have sat in a huddle playing round after round of “Never Have I Ever.” I once said, “Never have I ever liked riding a roller coaster,” and heard a “me, too!” in reply. Ding, ding, ding! An instant friendship was formed. Lots of bonding was had over “Never Have I Ever.” I always really liked the silly version of this game, where you share inconsequential facts, laugh over them and make new friends.

{Yes, I know this is generally a drinking game, but at camp, it was more of a ‘oh, that’s funny’ or a ‘me, too!’ game. Ever since then, I’ve always thought of it that way.}

In the spirit of sharing silly facts to make insta-friends, here are 5 new never-before-shared Never Have I Ever’s:

1. Never Have I Ever: Conquered My Fear of the High Ropes Course Elements.

likes-to-smile-never-ever-ropes-fear

Before you ever put on the climbing harness and the helmet, you think it will be fun. The thoughts go something like, “I would be so proud of myself if I climbed up there and conquered my fear.” But then the thoughts turn to, “Hmm…that’s pretty high. Am I athletic enough to climb around that thing? Will my hands stop shaking long enough to hold on?” This thought process is written all over my face. Unfortunately, that’s not a staged picture, that’s a real-time candid from a 2009 High Ropes Course experience. Kinda hysterical facial expression in retrospect, but alas…

I did climb all the way up there. First, you reach the top of a very tall platform where you can see over the tops of hundred-years-old trees. Then, the instructor clips you into a safety wire so you can swing from tire to tire, all while being suspended way up high in the air. The thought of stepping off that platform, well… The thought was scary enough. So I stayed put on the platform. Never have I ever stepped off and tried to conquer the elements.

2. Never Have I Ever: Tried Cottage Cheese.

A long time ago, I babysat for a three-year-old girl who thought that vomit was really “vom up,” like throw-up. She had this really dramatic way of asking sick people how they were feeling: “Oh no! Are you going to vom up?” When I look at cottage cheese, I hear her voice and think to myself, “Oh no! Am I going to vom up?” Between the look of it and what I imagine the texture must feel like: ew, ew, ew, ew, ewwwww!

3. Never Have I Ever: Been Able to Clap in Rhythm.

If I could give myself any one talent on the planet it would be musical ability. I want to be able to sing. And if it wouldn’t be asking too much, I would like to be able to sing and have rhythm! Oh man! The fun I could have. The karaoke I would belt out. My first song would be “Midnight Train to Georgia.” But alas, I cannot even clap in rhythm, let alone sing in anything resembling being anywhere near key (tone?).

Once, my coworkers and I were marveling over my lack of musical ability. I mentioned that I couldn’t clap in rhythm without throwing off the rhythm of everyone else around me. A coworker asserted, “Yes, you can! Everyone can. Here I’ll show you. Let’s clap the rhythm to Happy Birthday.” We tried for thirty minutes, but I kept throwing everyone off. And then she muttered, “maybe everyone can’t clap in rhythm…” Maybe one day I’ll learn, but until then, I’ll write overly enthusiastic comments on your Facebook wall and use far too many exclamation points!!!!!

4. Never Have I Ever: Understood the Lure of Las Vegas.

A great vacation is being near a body of water (ocean, lake, pool) with weather guaranteed to be warm enough for swimming and a load of books (as stated here). Party at the pool? For rest and relaxation?!?! I don’t get it.

Gambling has never much appealed to me, either.

The are rumors of great shows and great restaurants. I believe the rumors are true. But, I live in New York City. No need to fly across the country for that!

5. Never Have I Ever: Seen “The Goonies!”

Fact: I’ve never seen the Goonies. I told a good friend about the contents of this post before I began writing. When I got to the bit about never having seen Goonies, he said, “That’s just sad. I thought you like to smile?”

Have you ever?

And you? What is your best “Never Have I Ever?” Your top 5? I’d love to hear! Maybe it will make us insta-friends!

And I’m linking my list up to the link parties at: Back East Blonde, Keeping Up With The Cyberts, and Heavens to Meighan.

Until next time!

Stacey

P.S. I want to thank Betsy Transatlantically (love her blog!) for tagging me in her post this morning. Go read her list- it’s really fun, too!

  1. I totally love your honesty! :-) There’s so much I can relate to… I have never ever tried to climb, let alone hang on ropes. Don’t know what I would do if I was up there. šŸ˜‰ And I have never ever tried cottage cheese too, in fact I’m not a big fan of cheese anymore since my bowels get easily irritated by eating anything of cow milk – so only goat’s cheese goes for me. :-) Vegas was so much fun when we were there, but I never got lured into gambling – I couldn’t bear the thought of losing money so I didn’t touch anything. But I loved the atmosphere. And you’re so absolutely right – when you live in NYC (my favorite city of all time) you don’t need to fly so far away for only gambling and partying at pools. šŸ˜‰
I’ll let you in on a few other secrets of mine:I have never ever sat on a jetski since I’m afraid of deep waters, šŸ˜€ And coming in on a very close 2nd place: I never ever dove into deep waters, for that same reason. Oh and I never ever tried eating escargots (it looks like rubber) or went skiing (looks so scary going off a hill and I can’t ski. ;-)) There. I said it. :-)

    • Hi Inge,

I totally love your comment! Thanks so much for writing such a long and thoughtful response– it was so fun to read!!

I don’t know what you would do if you were up on High Ropes, but I know that I shake. Oh my! Let me know if you ever try it.

      Do you eat goat’s cheese?

NYC is my favorite city, too! NYC & Paris!! And if you didn’t have NYC I suppose I could see why the restaurants and shows in Vegas are exciting.

And I love, love, love that you shared Never Ever’s too! Thank you!! I’m not scared of water, so I’ve done both those things, but I can see why you wouldn’t do it if you were afraid. Just like me and the Ropes Course!

Whenever I see someone eat escargot, I think of that scene in Pretty Woman where Julia Roberts sends it flying across the room and says, “slippery little suckers.” Have you ever seen that movie?

I’m also terrified of skiing. The ski lift looks terrifying! You’re dangling over the hill to get to the top! YIKES!

Love that you said it! :) Like my post says today, now we’re insta-friends!

  2. the only time I’ve ever done a real zip line on a ropes course, I had to be pushed off because I was too scared to jump and too scared to climb back down. and I have NO desire to ever go to Vegas either. see? bonding already šŸ˜› (p.s. I tagged you in 5 things today!)

    • Hi Betsy!

I think they would have to push me off a real zip line, too! I was lucky I climbed up and so relieved to be back down on the ground! And I’m glad I’m not the only one who has NO desire to go to Vegas! Yay, bonding already! Let’s get out our bold necklaces šŸ˜€

Going to check out your post now!

      xoxo,
      Stacey

PS…I found this link-up through you and had a ball, so thank you!

  3. Jaime Ariella says:

Never have I ever seen goonies either. Don’t tell anyone!
Also, over my years at camp I had many near successes with the ropes course but in the end I could never quite do it. So I hear you.

    • Hi Jaime!

So glad to hear I’m not the only one who hasn’t seen The Goonies! Your secret is safe with me!

And I hear you on the Ropes Course… near success is the perfect phrase. I also couldn’t quite figure out how to step off the edge.

      xoxo,
      Stacey

  4. OMG such a fun post. I might have to jump on the bandwagon! I laughed out loud at your cottage cheese one. Hilarious!

    • Hi Rachael!

Absolutely jump on the bandwagon!! It would be so fun to read!

      xoxo,
      Stacey

  5. Great list! I’ve never seen the Goonies either but I have always wanted to go to Vegas. I will say, they have tons and tons of pools and even like full water parks at some of the casinos. It’s more like they are resorts where you happen to be able to gamble. I’m not a gambler either though so I’d just go for the pools. Thanks for linking up!

    • Hi Nadine,

Thanks so much for hosting the link-up, I had a blast writing this list!

Are the pools in Vegas calm and relaxing or are they parties? I feel like they are parties, but maybe that’s because people.com always shows celebrities hosting parties at pools in Vegas and I’ve misunderstood?

      xoxo,
      Stacey

      • Now I’ve never been but a lot of my friends have and many said that during the day it’s really just a relaxing place and you can get drinks delivered to you. That’s pretty much it. It’s also a lot calmer through the week than it is on weekends.

  6. dude, gotta watch ‘The Goonies’!!!!!!! I’ve never been to Vegas, but plan to next spring for a girls trip. Rest and relaxation with cocktails by the pool? Sounds terrific to me! And maybe I”ll win some coin. Oh, and I eat cottage cheese almost every day. The flavor is mild, but I get not being so sure about the texture. Try it! I think it’s worth it! =)

    • Hi Andrea!!

Everyone says that about the Goonies! I think I will have to give it a try! Definitely let me know how your girl’s trip to Vegas is– I love the sound of a girl’s trip. And I’ll think about the cottage cheese, think… :)

      xoxo,
      Stacey

  7. If it makes you feel better, I have never even HEARD of Goonies. šŸ˜› vagas? maybe one day but Button keeps me live’n high enough for now. ha.

    • Hi hi!

Yes!!! It does make me feel better that you’ve never heard of Goonies! :)

      xoxo,
      Stacey

  8. You got me on all of these except for the clapping one! I am so awful at keeping a beat whether it’s clapping, dancing, singing…anything! Thank you for linking up with us today!

    • Hi Whitney!

Thanks so much for hosting the link-up, I had the best time playing along! I can’t keep a beat for anything, glad to hear I’m not the only one!!

      xoxo,
      Stacey
