Book Club On Duty!

July 4th weekend is just around the corner. Pack up your Kindles. Throw in your sunscreen. Get ready to lounge.

We’re going to the beach house for the long weekend! And we’re packing beach reads. The beach house has a pool in the backyard, which has become my preferred location for reading, likely with an iced coffee in hand. You know me.

I’ve set-up almost the perfect weekend. Almost. The only thing missing are lovely people to chat with about the books! And then I thought: I love to read, I love to chat about what I’m reading, I love to chat with all of you (in the comments)… a Likes to Smile Book Club is in order! Who needs a lifeguard on duty when you have a book club on duty?! Grab a book. Let’s Rule the Pool.

Book Club on Duty! // Likes to Smile

I can read two beach books over the course of a four day weekend. Nerd alert! I’ve chosen Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns and Someday, Someday, Maybe.

I’ve been wanting to read Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns (the sequel to The Devil Wears Prada) ever since it was announced. My brain is captivated by the thought of picturing Meryl Streep as the devilish Miranda Priestly. Ooo, the deliciousness. The plot is that the former assistants have started their own high-end magazine and just when they think the past has remained behind them and Andy is about to get married… (duh duh duh)… they once again cross paths with the devil herself. Pass the sunblock, I’m hunkering down for hours to read through this one!

Allyssa mentioned this as her summer must read and now I want to read Someday, Someday, Maybe, too. The plot of this novel is described as: “a story about hopes and dreams, being young in a city, and wanting something deeply, madly, desperately. It’s about finding love, finding yourself, and perhaps most difficult of all in New York City, finding an acting job.” Oh…and Lauren Graham admitted it was loosely about her life, which makes it extra appealing (minute 1:24 in the video). I’m mixing up a pitcher of fruit-infused water, finding the perfect angle for my lounge chair and diving right into that book!

Two books, one weekend and a Likes to Smile book club! Ah-mazing! This book club is officially on duty!

Here’s how it will work: read one or both books between now and just after July 4th weekend.
On Monday, July 8th, we’ll discuss Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns. And on Wednesday, July 10th, we’ll discuss Someday, Someday, Maybe. My plan is to pose questions for all of us at the top of the blog and share my answers towards the end of the post. Everyone can discuss in the comments and I’m (obviously) going to join in on that discussion, as well.

UPDATE: I was not originally envisioning this as a link-up, but rather a discussion in the comments. But if you would like to write a post about either book, I would love to link to your post! Either leave the link in the comments on the day of the discussion or send me an email with the link and I will update my blog post to link to you! So fun! Lots of book goodness to discuss!

And you? Will you be “on duty” for book club, too? And if not… will you also be spending the long weekend with a (different) book?

Until next time!

xoxo,
Stacey

  1. How fun! Count me in for Revenge Wears Prada.

  2. I’ve been wanting to read both of those books so count me in!

  3. I want to read both of those books! But first, I need to read The Devil Wears Prada! Let’s hope I can manage to read all 3 in time!

    • Hi Allyssa,

My fingers are crossed that you can conquer 3 books by July 8! I have faith!

      xoxo,
      Stacey

  4. Fun idea…I’d be totally if I could manage to finish a book in a week! Ha! So doesn’t happen these days. I do love Lauren Graham though, so I might have to check that one out.

    • Hi Kelly!!

My fingers are crossed that the book is a “fast” read and you can join in. Also… the Lauren Graham book will be discussed on July 10, so you have 14 days. Is two weeks better than one week?!

      Thanks for liking the idea!

      xoxo,
      Stacey

  5. Being in Canada, I have a different long weekend than you and will be spending mine at my best friend’s wedding, but I am definitely in for likes to smile book club! Now I just need to decide which book to read!! Had never heard of Someday, Someday, Maybe but just watched that video and my love for lauren graham and the gilmore girls compels me to read it. Revenge wears prada just sounds fantastic too! Which to read?!

    • Hi Jaime!

It’s obvious: read both! Start with one and if you have time, move onto the other one! :)

      xoxo,
      Stacey

      • In the time between posting that comment and you posting your reply, I purchased Someday, Someday, Maybe for my Kobo! And since it happens to be my day off, I am going to start reading on the Starbucks patio with my iced coffee. :)

  6. I’m in!! Love a beach/pool read!!

    • Hi Mom!!

YAY!!! We can read the books side-by-side on lounge chairs at the beach house next weekend!

      xoxo,
      Stacey

  7. I want to read the Lauren Graham book! I can’t link up on Wednesday – would you recommend I do my post about it on the Tuesday or the Thursday?

    • Hi Betsy!

Doesn’t the Lauren Graham book look ah-mazing? I’m so excited to read it!

However, I was not picturing this as a link-up. I was planning on proposing questions in my blog post on Wednesday, July 10th so that we could have a discussion in the comments. But I love the idea of your doing a blog about the book. I would suggest that you write the blog on Tuesday and then you can post the link in the comments on Wednesday! And…any link that appears in the comments, I will update the blog post to include a link to your post within the text. That way, it’s sorta a link-up, but in a different sense. How does that work for you?

      xoxo,
      Stacey

  8. Love this idea!!

  9. I can’t wait to hear how you like these books. I may have to add them to my list. I wish I were a faster reader! Too many books and not enough time!

    • Hi Dawn!

I feel the same way… too many books and not enough time :) Hope you’re having a wonderful weekend!

      xoxo,
      Stacey

  10. Oh! I want to be part of the LIkes to Smile book club! Hmm…maybe I’ll stay up all night and read.
Not much time available with a toddler!

    xo Adri

    • Hi Adri!

You want to be a part of the Likes to Smile Book Club… abracazam! You are a part of the Likes to Smile Book Club!! Hope you are able to get the book(s) read with a toddler! We would (obviously) love to hear from you!

      xoxo,
      Stacey

  11. Oh nice! New books to read :-) I was looking for something new. I’m not gonna make it to read them, wish I could read faster but I’m very curious to know what you thought of them! Have fun on your weekend!!

    • Hi Claudia,

Hope you’re having a great weekend, too!! If you read them, definitely let me know what you think!

      xoxo,
      Stacey
